The village has for generations past farmed the steep hills and
moors that surround it and produced the wool that created and
sustained its growth until the early 1970's when it became all too
easy to import these same products from abroad.

Its mills disappeared almost faster than they had been built: its
workers had to find employment elsewhere ~ though that very
hardship has since knitted the village into a strong community.
